Diffinio Canrif | Defining a Century

Photo competition to shine a light on 20th Century architecture across Wales

On 1st July 2020 Design Circle is launching a photo competition across Wales, entitled Defining a Century / Diffinio Canrif to draw attention to the quality and variety of 20th Century architecture across the nation. The competition, open to all, encourages entrants to find and photograph the architectural gems in their area, with just one simple rule: all submissions must be of buildings or structures built between 1900 and 1999 in Wales.

The competition will run until the Autumn, with the winners awarded photographic prizes. Entrants are encouraged to submit as many images as they like, via Instagram or email. Entrants are to upload their photographs to their own Instagram accounts, tagging @DC.ffoto in the description so that it can be re-posted on the @DC.ffoto account, or they can email entries to Design Circle directly. For a full list of rules and more information please visit the competition website where there is an interactive map showing the location of some buildings to get people started.

Jonny Campbell, project lead:

‘For much of the 20th century, a group of architects and designers took inspiration from global design movements to define an architecture unique to Wales. We are looking for images that capture something of the story of these buildings and structures. That story could be to do with the architecture’s relationship to its users, its physical context, nature, or contemporary culture and politics. This competition is not about the technical prowess of the photographer, but about the ability to communicate an idea through a single frame.’

‘From grand buildings that express the civic pride of Wales’ urban centres, to groundbreaking factories designed for entirely new industries, and some of Wales’ best known engineering marvels, we are never far from one of these buildings yet many are at risk of being lost through neglect or redevelopment. We want people to get out, discover and document them before it is too late.’

Design Circle hopes that people will continue to engage with these buildings after the competition ends, with plans for an exhibition and publication of selected entries.

Cystadleuaeth ffotograffau i fwrw goleuni ar bensaernïaeth yr 20fed Ganrif ledled Cymru

Ar 1 Gorffennaf 2020 mae Design Circle yn lansio cystadleuaeth ffotograffau ledled Cymru, o dan y teitl Defining a Century / Diffinio Canrif i dynnu sylw at ansawdd ac amrywiaeth pensaernïaeth yr 20fed Ganrif ar hyd a lled y wlad. Mae’r gystadleuaeth, sydd ar agor i bawb, yn annog ymgeiswyr i ddarganfod a thynnu ffotograff o’r gemau pensaerniol yn eu hardal, a dim ond un rheol sydd: rhaid i bob cyflwyniad fod o adeiladau neu strwythurau a godwyd rhwng 1900 a 1999 yng Nghymru.

Bydd y gystadleuaeth ar agor tan yr hydref, a bydd gwobrau ffotograffaidd yn cael eu dyfarnu i’r enillwyr. Mae ymgeiswyr yn cael eu hannog i gyflwyno cynifer o ddelweddau ag y dymunent, drwy Instagram neu e-bost. Rhaid i ymgeiswyr lanlwytho eu ffotograffau i’w cyfrifon Instagram eu hunain, gan dagio @DC.ffoto yn y disgrifiad fel y gall gael ei ail-bostio ar gyfrif @DC.ffoto hefyd, neu gallant e-bostio ymgeisiadau at Design Circle yn uniongyrchol. Am restr lawn o’r rheolau a mwy o wybodaeth ewch i wefan y gystadleuaeth [https://www.designcirclewales.co.uk/welsh-translation] ble mae map rhyngweithiol sy’n dangos lleoliad rhai adeiladau i roi pobl ar ben y ffordd.

Jonny Campbell, arweinydd y prosiect:

‘Am lawer o’r 20fed ganrif, cymerodd grŵp o benseiri a dylunwyr ysbrydoliaeth o fudiadau dylunio byd-eang i ddiffinio pensaernïaeth unigryw i Gymru. Rydym ni’n chwilio am ddelweddau sy’n cipio peth o stori’r adeiladau a’r strwythurau yma. Gallai’r stori honno ymwneud â pherthynas y bensaernïaeth â’i defnyddwyr, ei chyd-destun corfforol, natur, neu ddiwylliant a gwleidyddiaeth gyfoes. Nid yw’r gystadleuaeth hon yn ymwneud â gallu technegol y ffotograffydd, ond yn hytrach y gallu i gyfleu syniad drwy un ffrâm.’

DEFINING A CENTURY | DIFFINIO CANRIF

‘O adeiladau mawreddog sy’n mynegi balchder dinesig canolfannau trefol Cymru, i ffatrïoedd arloesol a ddyluniwyd ar gyfer diwydiannau newydd sbon, a rhai o ryfeddodau peirianneg mwyaf adnabyddus Cymru, nid ydym ni byth ymhell o un o’r adeiladau hyn ond mae llawer mewn perygl o gael eu colli drwy esgeulustod neu ailddatblygiad. Rydym ni eisiau i bobl fynd allan, eu darganfod a’u cofnodi cyn iddi fynd yn rhy hwyr.’

Gobaith Design Circle yw y bydd pobl yn parhau i ymgysylltu â’r adeiladau hyn ar ôl i’r gystadleuaeth ddod i ben, gyda chynlluniau am arddangosfa a chyhoeddiad o’r ceisiadau sy’n cael eu dethol.

Ynghylch Design Circle Cylch gwirfoddol yw Design Circle o broffesiynolion meysydd creadigol ac adeiladu sy’n ymwneud â’r amgylchedd adeiledig, gydag aelodau gweithgar sy’n amrywio o benseiri ac artistiaid i gynllunwyr a rheolwyr prosiect.

Mae Design Circle yn hyrwyddo rhagoriaeth yn y gofodau a’r mannau sy’n cael eu ffurfio yn ein hamgylchedd adeiledig ac o’u cwmpas, gan gyflwyno arddangosfeydd, cystadlaethau, gweithdai dylunio, seminarau a gweithgareddau cymdeithasol ehangach i gefnogi’r nod hwn.

Sefydlwyd Design Circle yn 2008 ac mae wedi’i gyfansoddi’n ffurfiol fel cangen ddeheuol Cymdeithas Frenhinol Penseiri yng Nghymru, sydd ei hunan yn rhan o Sefydliad Brenhinol Penseiri Prydain.
