5 Questions, 1 Designer: Pili Enrich

As part of our new series, we are conversing with creatives from different disciplines, getting to know more about them and their work. This week, we had the chance to meet Pili, a graphic designer from Menorca.

Let’s get to know you:

I’m Pili, a Mediterranean Graphic Designer from the island of Menorca, Spain. Since I was very little I always loved to draw and paint. I began my artistic studies in Menorca, then I ended up studying Product Design in Asturias for a couple of years, but my real passion was Graphic Design. So I moved to Lleida, Catalunya, to study Advertising Graphics. In 2013 I started working as Graphic Designer; my journey hasn’t always been easy, but all these experiences have shaped me into the designer I am today. I have continued to do personal projects and courses every time I can to keep improving my skills. I always wanted to live abroad, so I made the move to England in 2016. As scary as it was back then, I don’t regret it because it’s been great for my career, my confidence and my English.

Since 2017 I have been the in-house Graphic Designer at World Sailing, the international governing body for the sport of sailing, in London. This role involves managing a broad brand – including many sub-brands and a charity – across the globe, so that keeps me busy! At the moment, with the current situation, I’m focusing on finishing my part-time studies in Motion Graphics, which I started last October. I want get the most value from this course and open my skill set to the world of Motion Graphics, with the help of Created Academy. Feel free to check out my work and get in touch if you have any questions, I will be happy to help!

How do you define your work?

This is difficult to answer because I feel my style of work is constantly evolving, specially as I’m learning new skills. I think I am quite versatile, I always try to adapt depending on the job or client I’m working with at the time. Looking at my personal work I would say that I tend to use bright colours, as well as line drawing and exploring with lettering.

Where/ how/ who do you get inspiration from?

When I look online, I still go to Designspiration, and nowadays Instagram is a massive source of inspiration. I also like to visit art and design museums, look at books and attend different creative events, especially whilst I’m living in London with so many great places at my doorstep! Some of my favorite designers which I feel inspired by are Martina Flor, Jessica Walsh, Paula Scher, Astrid Stavro or Anthony Burrill.

Best career decision you have made to-date?

Definitely moving to the UK. It helped me expand my comfort zone and overcoming lots of fears. I’ve been able to travel to different places and meet some amazing people too. And as a creative, living in London allows me to be surrounded by design everywhere I go. There are so many museums, exhibitions, festivals and events which keeps me motivated and give new ideas. And professionally, sadly there are more opportunities here than in my hometown, where I would love to go back in the future, hopefully with my own business!

If you could have done something differently in your career to date, what would it be?

To risk more and not let my insecurities and fears to decide for me. I would like to have continued studying sooner and also do Illustration.

Any advice for young designers / creatives?

Don’t fear failure, it’s part of the creative process. On each try we learn and improve, there are no right or wrong decisions. And most importantly, don’t underestimate yourself or compare with others, we are all different and have been through different situations.
